    PARK DEVELOPMENT NEWS
Arcade Creek Park and Jo Smith Nature Trail

As I write this, we are preparing to go to bid to complete the Arcade Creek Park and Jo Smith Nature Trail, bridge, and interpretive exhibit project. Look for project completion by October. Residents will soon be able to safely cross Verde Cruz Creek to connect to the nature area along Arcade Creek. The trail will continue on the Verde Cruz Creek flood plain located between the developed park and Verde Cruz Creek. The interpretive exhibits provide information about the plants and animals found along the creeks as well as information about the Arcade Creek watershed, volunteer opportunities, and local wetlands open for touring. A bulletin board will list local nature activities of interest. This project is being funded through a California Recreational Trails grant and a California Riparian and Riverine Habitat grant.

LOOK FOR THE GRAND OPENING OF THE JO SMITH NATURE TRAIL ON NOVEMBER 3RD (TENTATIVE DATE).

    Hamilton Street Park

Staff continues to fix the irrigation at this park. We are planning to paint the office and the community center. New flooring as well as room dividers will be installed in the small recreation room. Look for other minor improvements as we find the time and money. A cell tower will be installed at this park next to the freeway by Metro PCS.

    Oakdale Park

The grand opening for the new Gymnasium was held on June 16. The completion of construction has been delayed but should be completed by the time you read this. The new gymnasium can accommodate 279 for banquets and 479 for meetings. Look for new events at the Gymnasium and outdoor amphitheatre this coming year.

Plans for the remaining redevelopment of Oakdale Park are complete. Future improvements should include the lighted soccer fields, a redeveloped baseball diamond, parking, walkway connections, a restroom, group picnic area, play areas and a splash park. The district has received half of the funding needed through the 2002 Park Bond Act to fund the re-grading the site, construction of the two lighted soccer fields, installation of sidewalks, a small restroom, and rehabilitation of the ball diamond. We have applied for a Land and Water Conservation grant to complete this phase. We hope to hear from the State in October. We will soon be looking for funding to construct the play areas, splash park, and picnic shelter.
